About John

I’d describe myself as a technologist who thinks he is a marketer. I’ve spent practically my entire technical career developing and building marketing applications for the web. I think it’s given me a unique understanding of the technical side of marketing, which I have to say is actually very challenging and a lot of fun.

I’ve been designing and developing web solutions for the last 16 years.  I’ve been fortunate enough to work with some great companies including Be Free, ValueClick, Gather, and now Skyword as Chief Technology Officer. Proof that it’s better to be lucky than smart!

I’ve lead the development and deployment of massively scalable web-based solutions including the tracking and real-time warehousing of billions of ad impressions across multiple datacenters.  Much of that work was done long before Hadoop was even envisioned. Scalability and analyzing massive data sets are problems that I enjoy very much.  love big data, I can not lie.

Data mining and machine learning are technical hobbies that I enjoy as well.  I have experience with advanced information processing such as classifiers, regression analysis, neural networks, and association rule generation. It’s a perfect combination of math and programming!

I began my career in 1993 as a software developer at the Department of Environmental Protection in the Pennsylvania state government (I’m not a tree hugger).  It became apparent to me in my early years that I have little patience for large bureaucracies, but I’m truly thankful for the opportunity they gave me to start my career.

Later I served as a software engineering consultant from 1996 to 1997 before joining Be Free, Inc. as the Director of Engineering. Be Free was one of the very first affiliate marketing companies and helped turn that industry into a giant revenue producer.  Be Free went public in 2000 and after the bubble burst turned into a stable and profitable company.  Be Free later merged with ValueClick and I stayed on as Director of Engineering for several years.

In 2005, I joined Skyword as Vice President of Development and was later named CTO.

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh in 1990.

In my free time I enjoy jogging, working out, beer brewing, and any type of concert with very loud music.
